Southern Cross Industrial Estate, Stormwater Design
Client: Ballina Shire Council
The 45 ha Southern Cross Industrial Estate is located on a low-lying coastal floodplain. GeoLINK collaborated with Ballina Shire Council to assess the site constraints and develop design objectives that take into account the future impacts of sea level rise and increased rainfall intensity; undertake the civil design of the site including earthworks, roads, lots, stormwater and other services; and prepare a development application for the proposed expansion of the industrial estate.
The design of the stormwater system became the key focus of the overall civil design due to the high proportion of impervious surfaces, the low-lying flat topography and the high tailwater levels at the tidally-influenced discharge location.
The design solutions developed by GeoLINK will provide a high-level of stormwater treatment utilising bio-retention basins, which double as landscaped areas that will improve the aesthetics of the industrial estate. Furthermore the design ensures the existing hydrologic characteristics of the site are preserved as well as protecting existing habitat areas and providing a vital link between isolated conservation areas.
