The new Grafton bridge opened to traffic on Thursday, 12 December 2019; sharing traffic with the aging bridge which has been operating since 1932.
The $240 million project was funded by NSW Government and showcases a unique design of interlocking pre-cast blocks held in place with cables. It involved building an additional 525 metre bridge 70 metres downstream from the existing road and rail bridge. The new bridge currently has two lanes but has been designed to be increased to four lanes when traffic levels require it. The project also upgraded parts of the road network in Grafton and South Grafton to connect the new bridge to the existing road network.
Thousands of people turned out to walk across the new bridge prior to it being open to traffic.
