About the role:
We are looking for a highly motivated full-time Senior Ecologist to join the GeoLINK team. We have an experienced and well-respected team of ecologists and we are looking to bolster our capacity.

The successful candidate will have the option of being based in either our Coffs Harbour or Armidale office.

The Senior Ecologist role is diverse and interesting – some days you will assist the ecological team to problem solve and devise solutions to highly technical ecological issues, other days you might prepare proposals, review reports or undertake field investigations in a variety of terrestrial ecosystems. We will ask you to provide high level reporting and specialist ecological advice to identify environmental constraints and opportunities across a variety of projects. You will work on development applications; REFs; EISs; and various management and monitoring plans.

The position involves mentoring GeoLINK staff and working with and/or leading inter-disciplinary project teams. Exceptional communication skills will be essential to develop contacts and networks to assist marketing and development of business.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Undergraduate Bachelor of Science/ Environmental Science/ Applied Science/ Natural Resource Management or equivalent in related discipline, with high levels of academic achievement.
  • Maintain a current Class C Driver’s License.
  • Minimum experience of ten years in environmental/ ecological consulting. Similar experience in local or state government preparing or assessing similar duties will be considered on merit.
  • Proven ability to write clear, concise and scientifically accurate reports such as BDARs, REFs, EISs, SISs, VMPs, offset strategies, species specific management plans, weed management plans, nest box management plans and review these if prepared by others.
  • Extensive demonstrated knowledge of techniques, government standards/ policies and experience in the delivery of all aspects and scales of ecological field surveys and statutory assessments for both flora and fauna.
  • Extensive experience in interpreting and applying relevant environmental legislation (NSW and Commonwealth as a minimum).
  • Intermediate level of GIS skills i.e., ability to interrogate data and prepare ecological attribute maps.
  • High level fauna and botanical skills i.e., identification, PCT mapping, biometrics, etc.
  • Very high level of self-motivation, self-discipline, initiative and demonstrated ability to manage the position’s responsibility; and perform complex tasks and manage projects with minimal supervision.
  •  Accreditation as an assessor under the NSW Biodiversity Accredited Assessor System to apply the Biodiversity Assessment Method.
  • Thorough understanding of WH&S requirements and obligations.

Additional desirable experience:

  • Experience working with the resource industries, and/ or linear infrastructure on major projects at the planning and/ or implementation stage.
  • High level and depth of experience in threatened species management from preparing large scale management strategies to devising and implementing monitoring plans.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field.
  • Membership of a relevant and accredited professional association.
